A Big Shot for Me, A Free Pattern for You

It all started about ten days ago when Sizzix sent me a Big Shot to use, review and play with. Pretty exciting stuff! I was prepared to take a little time getting to know the machine. (For the record, I've never used any cutting machine before.) As it turned out, there was no need.  If there were such a thing as plug-and-play for fabric/quilting machines, it would be the Big Shot.  All you have to do is put the handle on, open the die packages and you are ready to begin.

Despite having other projects that need finishing, I felt compelled to make something right away. I chose two dies: the square and half square triangles for blocks finishing at 4 1/2".  These are extremely versatile dies for quilters and a good place to start building a die collection.
I grabbed some fabric and got started.  The instructions are simple and easy to follow. My biggest concern was remembering that the dies have very, very sharp blades embedded. Soon, a stack of HST's (that's half square triangles to you non-quilters) sat on my table, waiting impatiently for me to put them all together into something that made sense.

And here's how they turned out.  The table topper measures 40 inches square. I've written a pattern so you can share in my fun.  Now, you don't have to have a Sizzix Big Shot to make this, but the precision of the HST's does make life a little easier.

Click here for the free pattern. I've added it to the Freebies section so you'll be able to access it easily in the future.

Expect to hear more about my Big Shot in the future. I have big plans for this little helper. And not all of them involve sewing.

  4. Your tutorials are simply the best! Kudos to you for making them free and easy to use. I've made several Break Buddies, and now will make the table topper into a wall hanging. Will look into the Big Shot too!

  5. Ooooh that Big Shot is prettier than my "Go Baby" by AccuQuilt, which I won in a giveaway few months back. Like you, I started with the squares and triangles dies to start with. I know that I can make many blocks with those shapes....pinwheels, nine patch and so much more!

    Enjoy your Big Shot!

  7. How cool is that?! I can use something that cuts straight lines; I manage to mess up even with a rotary cutter. Cute topper.

  8. You can use a Big Shot to cut fabric? I have one collecting dust on my shelf...I thought it was just for paper. Oh this does open up a new world of possibilities. Thanks for the info!!
