This is how I ended the year--a nice big stack of books. Some award winning books at that. With the exception of The Windup Girl, these are Young Adult Science Fiction. The Windup Girl is science fiction too, but definitely an adult book.
If you are familiar with these titles, you may think I spent the year end on a depressing note. (The one thing they have in common is a dystopian future.) However, any book that sucks me in and keeps me reading straight through makes me happy. The Windup Girl and The Hunger Games did just that. So for me, this was a great way to end the year.
It's not a bad thing to start off a new year with questions and thoughts about where we humans are heading. How long can we play at being gods before we completely destroy our world? What price will future generations be paying for our hubris? Will technology continue to push us into areas where our collective moral compass fails utterly? It's worth thinking about even if you aren't comfortable with bleak and brutal portrayals of possible futures.
Great questions to think about, Melissa. I think we should all keep those kinds of questions at the forefront of our minds...just so we stay in tuned and stay on track.
ReplyDeleteI mentioned this topic to my robot vacuum but his conversation sucks. I then asked my fridge what he thought, i was answered by a cool stare. I threw the topic to my microwave, she dismissed me with a wave of her door. I know better than to talk to my iron, no doubt we'd just get into a heated arguement about other pressing matters. I really hope machines don't take over the world.
ReplyDeleteAh.. more books! I recently finished A Dance with Dragons, plus the previous 4 books in that series. I believe I got that recommendation from one of your posts. Have you read the children's book The Cabinet of Wonders by Marie Rutkaski? The heroine has a bibliophilic mechanical spider who lives in her hair and gives her advice.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melissa. At least today my eyes aren't watering continuously. I finally feel like looking at the blogs- a sure sign that I must be on the mend. I think Laela would enjoy these books. I actually think she has read one of them because that author of the series sounds familiar. I will ask her. Glad to see you got rest (sans the flu). Carolina
