Fibers get around. Various processes are involved but eventually it makes it from field to product. Harvest or sheering, dyeing and weaving, cutting and constructing--sometimes these are done by the same person, or persons, but usually not. Each step takes the fibers on a long journey. Where that journey ends is impossible to say.
An archaeological dig in North Yorkshire has yielded fibers that suggest Roman legionnaires wore socks. Rust from a sandal contained the fibers in question. The fact that soldiers wore socks doesn't really surprise me. I am, however, intrigued by the idea of them knitting socks on cool autumn nights singing bawdy songs and passing around the beer.
