Roman Yarn

Fibers get around.  Various processes are involved but eventually it makes it from field to product.  Harvest or sheering, dyeing and weaving, cutting and constructing--sometimes these are done by the same person, or persons, but usually not.  Each step takes the fibers on a long journey.  Where that journey ends is impossible to say.

An archaeological dig in North Yorkshire has yielded fibers that suggest Roman legionnaires wore socks.  Rust from a sandal contained the fibers in question.  The fact that soldiers wore socks doesn't really surprise me.  I am, however, intrigued by the idea of them knitting socks on cool autumn nights singing bawdy songs and passing around the beer.
