Bargain Buttons

Do you ever find yourself frustrated with the choice of colors when it comes to buttons?  With so many colorful fabrics out there it can be a challenge to find the right hue for your project.  Like the button on the Christmas ornament in the last post.  I forgot to mention that it's a custom button made of polymer clay.  Another very easy way to personalize.

To make this little stash of buttons I used two colors that match the Sis Boom Queen Street collection in the blue colorway.  These are basic buttons--nothing fancy.  But they're ready for me to mix and match with the other buttons and decorative elements in my stash.  And all it cost me was less than an hour of my time and $2.50--not a bad bargain at all.

Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.  When placing the holes in the buttons, keep the size consistent throughout the layer of clay.  If your holes are wide enough on the front side but narrow on the back, you will have a hard time getting your needle through the button.  I use a bamboo skewer to put holes in mine and it seems to be the perfect size.  And of course, always work on a protected surface and never use your tools for food preparation.

  1. Another Brilliant idea!! Oh the possibilities! When I first saw the photo I thought you'd covered the buttons in Sis Boom fabric, that's how close you got the colours, and captured that essence.

  2. I got a little/cheap toaster oven to dedicate to button making along with a pasta roller (40% coupon in Michaels) and I'm ready to roll. There's so many creative buttons you can make and the ideas are endless. Love your colors, they're beautiful.
