Whimsical Bird House

More Mod Podge Madness.  The stuff is so addictive.  I'm beginning to see why they sell it in gallon jugs.  (At first, I thought that size was for grade school classrooms.  Now, I'm not so sure.)
For this project, you need a small wooden birdhouse, gesso, Mod Podge regular and Mod Podge Sparkle, fabric scraps, glitter glue and miscellaneous trims and notions to accessorize your house.
When Mod Podging fabric onto wood, I always prepare the surface by lightly sanding and then applying at least one coat of gesso.  If you are working with dark fabrics, you could skip this step.  But if your fabrics are light, you need to have a nearly white background to maintain color clarity.  And gesso dries quickly so it isn't much of an imposition to the instant gratification issue.
After applying the fabric with regular Matte Mod Podge, I applied a coat of Sparkle Mod Podge.  When it was completely dry, I went about decorating the exterior of my little blue house.  Here's where the glitter glue comes in handy.  You can also use your Sparkle or Glitter Mod Podge.  I used the glue because it was thicker and I wanted the glitter to actually come up a little into the button holes.
The "grass" trim was adhered with a liberal amount of Mod Podge.  And that's it!  Easy peasy.  I like that it is an unexpected little item--one that would fit perfectly into a little girl's room and add just the right amount of whimsy and sparkle.  Or a big girl's desk to remind her to let her inner child out to play now and then.

I'm especially fond of the sparkly goat who appears to be lounging on the side of the house.  Probably because he reminds me of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

  1. Oh my goodness this is so cute! I think a trip to Michaels is in order! But it's a crazy week ahead so don't hold your breath too long! I have got to check out the sparkle and glitter Modge Podge! I looked for it quickly at Hobby Lobby Sat. but didn't see it.
Okay off to wind down. Kelsey's first day of school in the A.M. AND PTC meeting at Ethan's school before that. Hmmmm I don't have any of the summer bank statements! Well I guess I better track that down being treasurer and all! Gosh I am glad this is my last year on the board!
