Yesterday I tempted you with a peek of the PKM sewing break. Today I took some pictures of the finished goodies in all their finery. Just look at this portable cuteness.

I love the floral print all gussied up in a Cup Sleeve. The freebie pattern is here. (Or just click through by selecting Cup Sleeve in the Freebie section on the top left of the blog.)

Maybe you want more than one look. Or maybe you need a few for gifts. They work up quickly and never fail to bring a smile to the recipient.

Of course, I had to add some embellishment. I used one of these to make the coin purse. (It's lined with green check but you'll just have to take my word on that as I found it impossible to get a picture while holding it open.) A crochet flower and a couple of buttons add to the nostalgic feel of this ensemble.

With Valentine's, Easter and Mother's Day coming up in the next several months it might be a good idea to stock up on a little PKM for special projects like these.

Wasting the Weekend

Have you been enjoying your weekend? The weather here has been wonderful. For a Southern California girl, at least. If you like cold temps and wet and snow, you'd be miserable. But if sunny, 73 degrees with an ocean breeze sounds like perfect winter weather, you'd be in heaven.

As you can see, the nasturtiums are thriving. Those leaves really are the size of plates. I love them. They pop up all over the yard and grow with complete abandon. Thank goodness the gopher doesn't like them.

I have tried to enjoy time outdoors. But yesterday was a day for tax preparation and other organizational computer related duties. To make up for it, I grabbed a few minutes at the sewing machine. A few more little touches and I'll be able to show you the finished results.

Today, however, I am determined to get away from the desk, out of the house and into the sunshine. I hope all of you are able to end the weekend on a good note, ready to face a new week.

Basket Transformation

Remember the $2 plastic basket? The one I mentioned here. Quite the transformation, don't you think? All that was required was some fabric, felt, Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue and a few stitches.

I used 2 1/4" strips of Jane Sassaman's Early Birds fabric--two strips each of three different prints. After weaving a row of strips through the holes in the basket, I hand stitched the ends in place on the inside.

To cover those exposed raw edges of the strips and tidy up the interior of the basket, I measured the inside. Using the measurements around the top and the bottom, along with the height, I cut the fabric, stitched the side and hemmed the top. I used gathers to take in the bottom edge before gluing it down. A piece of felt, cut to size, was glued on the bottom.

Finally, I made a fancy bow to add some panache. I attached it with a safety pin through one of the center loops. And that was it. All done and ready to be filled with a simple picnic or a small stitching project.

If you prefer your drama on the frilly side, use a white basket with Jennifer Paganelli's Sis Boom fabrics. You could even add a glittery brooch to the bow on the front for some bling.

Slower Than Molasses

I seem to be moving in slow motion around here the last several days. Even this great little package of goodies from Pam hasn't driven me into a frenzy. And that's pretty amazing in itself, because look at that loot! Japanese purse hardware! A little notebook that is just so Stinka. Even some caffeine.

A combination of dreary weather and allergy medicine is raining all over my parade. I did manage a quick finish to this project before I slid into the molasses. Check back later to see how I turned a cheap $2 Target find into something darling.

Oh, and the post title...when we were little and were dawdling along, my mother would tell us to hurry up, that we were moving slower than molasses in January going uphill. So....no more dawdling. I think I hear the little purse accessories begging for some attention. Thanks, Pam! I need that inspiration.

Quick, Easy and Inexpensive Fridge Magnets

Quick, easy, inexpensive and pretty enough to give as a gift. Sometimes projects meeting that criteria are hard to come by. If you have a few fabric scraps, or not, a few decorative buttons and some glue, you're almost finished already!

I found the plastic clips for these fancy little fridge magnets at Target for $1. (That's $1 for all four clips!) They came with a small magnet already glued on the back. I gathered some yo yo's and some buttons and started auditioning.

No yo yo's. No problem. Large buttons look just as good on their own. As long as they have personality plus, you're set. Just glue them on.

If you choose the yo yo route, simply glue the yo yo down first. Then glue the button of your choice to the center. I used a low temperature glue in my glue gun for this project. You could easily use a craft glue like Allene's Tacky Glue.

It's a great project for kids. Just think of the smiles a child could put on the face of a teacher or grandparent. Of course, if you're a kid at heart, you can just make oodles of these for yourself and smile every time you walk past them.

For Pete's Sake

Stinka gets her fair share of press around here. Poor Pete doesn't get equal time. It's his own fault. He just isn't as interested in the camera. In fact, I believe he gets annoyed because the camera prevents me from paying proper attention to him. When he's in the mood for attention, he wants full attention. On him. One hundred percent.

I managed to grab this one shot. And he managed to check out the quilt I was photographing, although not with the same enthusiasm as Stinka evaluates quilts. I can't show the quilt yet but at least I can show you Pete and one of his moods.

I Love Lucy and a Black Cat

Fabric scraps aren't the only kind of scraps around here. There are yarn scraps as well. I admit, I'm not nearly as good at using up yarn as I am fabric. But I've been wanting to make one, or three, of Lucy's bags for some time. The colors I really want to use are not in my stash.

So the first bag was going to have to use up some yarn scraps. Maybe the second as well. Because only then will I feel good about buying more yarn. (The yarn is inexpensive Red Heart Designer Sport yarn. I used two strands together with a size K hook.)

But guess what? Even though this isn't the bag I'm pining for, it turned out to be quite fun and colorful. Especially with the little flowers for embellishment. You can find Lucy's tutorial for the bag here. And for the flowers, here.

Naturally, I had to have assistance photographing the bag. Stinka thinks she has editorial rights as well as a modeling contract. Unfortunately, she was a bit too hyper for the modeling. These are the only photos that did not have black blurs of cat in them.

And while she looks relaxed in this picture, she's actually biting the bark, about to swing herself right off the branch with her jaguar impersonation. You have to love this cat.

Little Things from Big Inspiration

It's camellia time again. The narrow walkway on the side of the house is littered with fallen camellias. This particular tree has reached the roof line. Waxy pink blossoms with their intricate veins always inspire me.

So did this architectural element at the Park last weekend. The nooks and crannies played hide and seek with the sunlight.

And what, you might ask, do camellias and building ornaments have to do with each other? Not too much really. Unless you're me. Then the camellias make you think of PamKittyMorning's sweet fabrics. The ornaments remind you that you have a small resin frame sitting lonely on the shelf. And then you think, "Of course!" You grab the Mod Podge, a fabric scrap, the frame and an applique letter. You get busy and in no time at all, you have a great little gift to put in the mail.

Coffee, Tea or Energy -- Break Buddy Tutorial

If you head over to FreeSpirit's blog, you'll find my latest tutorial. Who doesn't need a handy little helper like this? The pockets hold tea bags, Emergen-C packs and Starbucks Via instant coffee packages.

Keep one in your handbag, your gym bag, your desk drawer, your glove compartment....well, you get the idea. You'll always be prepared.

I pieced one in Sis Boom. You could easily use the Mug Rug Template here and trim it to size before assembling it.

For a less overtly feminine choice, here's one made up in Jenean Morrison's Power Pop.

Plenty of interest and I love the cornflower blue with the pops of yellow and espresso brown.

And if we're going to talk about coffee addicts, I think Pam and I are vying for a title. So it's only appropriate that PamKittyMorning fabric be used for a coffee buddy.

Sweet and lovely on the outside. Powerful kick on the inside. Just perfect.

A Mug Rug Template

Let's just admit it. I'm the kind of quilter/crafter/seamstress who thinks patterns are more like guidelines and rules are meant to be broken. I work by instinct and intuition more than by rules. It works for me. But I understand this fly-by-the-seat-your-pants process isn't for everyone.

Whether I'm making mug rugs or scrappy blocks, I just start cutting and sewing. For some of you, the mere thought of this is enough to give you hives. For me, totally liberating. Perhaps I can entice you to play along with me by giving you a template to calm your fears and ease your mind.

Cut your pieces out pursuant to the following diagram. (Click on the pictures to enlarge.)

Now start sewing.

It's Friday already. The first week of the year. Gone. Just like that. It seems a little surreal to me. I had planned to do a lot more around here in this first week of 2012.

At least we still have the weekend. Some of Jennifer's Girl's World Vibe arrived on my doorstep this week and I'm anxious to see how well it plays with her past collections. Since Christmas depleted my little stack of mug rugs, I think I'll start with a few of them. It's the perfect jumping off point for weekend fabric play.

Ah, Dystopia

This is how I ended the year--a nice big stack of books. Some award winning books at that. With the exception of The Windup Girl, these are Young Adult Science Fiction. The Windup Girl is science fiction too, but definitely an adult book.

If you are familiar with these titles, you may think I spent the year end on a depressing note. (The one thing they have in common is a dystopian future.) However, any book that sucks me in and keeps me reading straight through makes me happy. The Windup Girl and The Hunger Games did just that. So for me, this was a great way to end the year.

It's not a bad thing to start off a new year with questions and thoughts about where we humans are heading. How long can we play at being gods before we completely destroy our world? What price will future generations be paying for our hubris? Will technology continue to push us into areas where our collective moral compass fails utterly? It's worth thinking about even if you aren't comfortable with bleak and brutal portrayals of possible futures.

Mod Podge + Laminate = Quick and Easy Project

Sometimes you need to get back to the basics and just play. With one year ending and the next coming hard and fast on its heels, it's easy to get caught up in all the things that need doing, the lists that need making, etc. When you feel yourself slipping into the chaos, it's best to just let go and find time to get grounded again. And there's nothing like a quick Mod Podge project to brighten things up and have you smiling.

Grab a few supplies:

Mod Podge and applicator
Inexpensive wooden frame
Scissors
Piece of laminated fabric big enough to cover the frame and wrap to the back
Decorative trim, optional

Cut the fabric one inch bigger than the frame on all sides. With frame face side down on the wrong side of fabric, trace the opening. Cut fabric away from opening along the traced line. Apply Mod Podge to the frame and adhere the fabric. Smooth out any air bubbles.

Apply Mod Podge to the sides and along the back edges. Fold fabric around frame. If necessary cut notches at the corners to ease the folding. Press firmly to adhere fabric.

Using Mod Podge or other craft glue, apply trim to inside of frame edge. Allow to dry.

Insert picture. Enjoy the frame. It's that easy!

Of course, you can use fabric that is not laminated for this project. Just apply several coats of Mod Podge to seal it, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

There's nothing like an unexpected gift to get you in the holiday spirit. This adorable little kitty was in the mailbox the other day. She came all the way from Florida to sit under my tree. Isn't she cute? I'm calling her Mirabelle.

Off the Grid

Okay, we weren't really off the grid, but we were away from home for several days last week. We left Stinka in charge. A quick road trip to meet up with a few family members in Vegas kept me away from the sewing machine and blogging.

Pam recommended a side trip to Henderson to visit Quiltique. Great call! As you can see from my purchase, I couldn't resist some fat quarters of Pam's fabric. And since Rachael has inspired me to continue my paper piecing adventure with her ever-growing stack of adorable Sis Boom hexies, I had to buy some of those too.

Yesterday, in between laundry and housework, I tried to make up for lost time by preparing this little stack. After an afternoon with these, I understand how people become obsessed.

What have you been up to? Ready for Christmas? I'm not. But I'm happy to sit and forget all about it while I sew up a new stack of cute, perfect hexies.

Old Dog, New Trick

There are many advantages to keeping a small stash of scraps on hand. Once you put them away, you'll need a specific project and plenty of eagerness to dig them out and start playing. If you keep some out where you can see them, you're likely to find yourself immersed in new scrappy projects.

With the holidays in full swing, I find myself drawn back to my little scrap pile. After the Spiderweb quilt was pieced (see here, here and here), I still had plenty of Sis Boom scraps set aside. Every time I straighten up my sewing area, I find myself drawn to these scraps.

This time, I tried something completely new to me--paper piecing. I admit that the idea of putting paper through my sewing machine is not easy to get over, but the results are pretty spectacular. I used two free online patterns by Carol Doak.

I haven't decided what to do with these yet. A mug rug and a pillow perhaps. I'm not ready to carve out enough time to up the ante and do more complicated patterns. Like Rachael's. She inspires me. Perhaps after the holidays.

Pillow Drama

Sixteen days until Christmas! Can you believe it? Hopefully, you're on top of it and have everything done. Unlike me. I did manage to get these two pillows done for my mother. They may be a bit more dramatic than she's used to but they're going to liven up her small space in a big way.

These are made with Jane's new line, Early Birds. And again, I have fussy cut from her large prints placing the design element front and center. It is so easy to create the drama. Choose a different colorway and get a completely different look.

So, how's your list? All checked off? Or waiting for inspiration?

What's Missing?

Can you guess the things I think are missing in this picture? Coffee and something to snack on. I'm so predictable, aren't I? Since this is not for me, I decided not to risk crumbs or spills. Plus, the pecan pie is not out of the oven yet.

I took a few minutes yesterday to play with scraps. This morning I quilted and bound them. They are now ready for their new home. Because this mug rug is a bit on the large size, it could easily be used under a centerpiece to adorn a table. Of course, it's up to its owner to determine just where it will end up. One thing I know for certain, it will be loved.

The oven timer just went off. Time for pie! Wish you could be here to share it.

Dormancy

December has arrived. Christmas is coming. There is much to do in the coming weeks. But I'm not feeling very festive. In fact, I'm feeling like this dwarf hydrangea. It's as though I'm trying to come out of a dormant state. All I can do is keep moving, keep plodding and checking things off the list.

Life is like that sometimes. New things burble under the surface, waiting for the right moment to reach out towards the light. If you try to force them, they are likely to be stunted and pale. Better to wait patiently and be ready. This is the time to tend to the weeds and nourish the soil.

Weeding and cultivating takes the form of cleaning, reorganizing, and throwing things away. Scraps of paper are sorted. Ideas are gathered together. Fabrics are stashed. All of the things I don't quite get around to doing while I'm in the midst of projects are finally getting done. It doesn't make for interesting blog posts though.

Soon, I'll have some fun holiday posts for you. The drudgery of organizing will not keep me down for long.

Spiderweb Progress

Happy Monday! How was the weekend? Anything creative happen in your world? Amid the housework and errand running, I sat down with the Sis Boom Spiderweb quilt. The primitive quilting stitches are adding so much depth to the quilt.

They're even adding a little drama to the back side.

I'm using my Anchor perle cottons for this project. And I'm using lots of color. There are many hours left before the quilting is finished but it finally feels like the end is in sight. I can't wait until it goes up on the wall.

However, it's time to set this aside and get to some holiday sewing. Only 27 days left until Christmas!

Do you know Natalie Lymer? The creative brain behind Cinderberry Stitches? If not, you're in for a treat. I've rounded up some pictures from Flickr to show you a few of the patterns of Cinderberry Stitches. Cute, aren't they? But for a healthy dose of cuteness, go visit her blog.

I've followed Natalie's blog for years. Lurked would be a more apt description. The joyfulness of her work is readily apparent, not only in the subjects but in the colors as well. However, it's the combination of embroidery and quilting that really got to me. I'm still not over it. In the back of my mind are ideas for wall hangings that make good use of embroidered designs along with my favorite fabrics to frame them all.

While I was at Quilt Market, standing in Jane's booth talking to a passerby, I heard an Australian accent. Not something you hear every day, certainly not in Houston. Naturally, I turned around. I had to double check her name tag to be sure I was reading it correctly because it was none other than the talented Natalie herself! She is every bit as delightful as you might expect. I certainly never thought I'd talk about the San Diego Zoo while at Quilt Market, much less with an Australian, but that's what happened. A fun conversation to be sure.

I do hope you will go visit Natalie's blog and get to know her. Her new patterns include deer and hedgehogs and her new fabric line for Lecien is called Woodland. Lots of magical things to discover.

Oh Thank Cuteness!

In the States we will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday. This year Generation Q has started off a week of Oh Thank Cuteness! posts. Bloggers share about things they're grateful for, the cute things in life. For those of us without children, it generally means talking about our furry kids. But in my case, it has to be once removed.

Most of you already know that we no longer have any pets here at Casa P. The last of our geriatric animals died last April. It would have been much harder to make the adjustment to a "no pet" household if it weren't for these two characters, Stinka and Petey.

We are so lucky that our neighbors don't mind their cats hanging out in our yard. Of course, I suspect that even if our neighbors did mind, the cats wouldn't pay one bit of attention and would continue to show up regularly to inspect gopher holes, play hide and seek in the planter beds, catch lizards and generally get up to cat mischief.

Last month, we even got a card from these two. I laugh every time I look at this card. I can imagine Stinka sitting and reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" or "The Art of War".

I'm grateful for these critters and for their owners who let them spend time here at Casa P. I'm grateful for many other things as well. Family, friends and you, my faithful blog readers.

Have You Met Mollie?

Mollie Makes is a British magazine which is available in electronic format as well as traditional print. As you can see on this cover, the tag line is "living and loving handmade". I love this magazine--beautiful photographs, fun projects and great inspiration.

I picked up this copy at my local Joann's. Fat Quarterly found one at Barnes and Noble. But you can order them online through the link found at Mollie Makes' The Making Spot.

This issue came with the tiny hardware to make one coin purse. I could not make up my mind--Sis Boom or PKM, Sis Boom or PKM. So I made two, hoping it would become clear. It didn't. They're both darling. If you had to decide, which would you choose?

Scrap Pile

What is it about scraps? I can't seem to get through a week without using them in one form or another. I've been busy with several things I must do before the holidays arrive. While I am making progress with those things, I really want to spend time playing in the "studio", doing whatever comes to mind.

To placate my crazy child, I play with scraps. Mug rugs will make excellent gifts--if I can part with them. These two are particular favorites. Sassaman scraps add an incredible amount of drama in a small space. Don't you agree?

But this is the project that calls out the loudest. The Sis Boom Spiderweb quilt is ready for hand quilting. I'm looking forward to using my perle cotton threads and some primitive stitches. It's a really big carrot that dangles in front of me, urging me to finish up the other stuff.

PamKittyDay at Casa P

Unless you've been hiding under a rock lately, or at least not following fabric blogs, you may not recognize this coy little kitten. PamKittyMorning came out with her first fabric line for Lakehouse Dry Goods this year and it has finally hit shops. Vintage cuteness, fresh color and mixed scale prints make up the collection.

I've been waiting to get my hands on some. The mailman delivered mine late yesterday afternoon. Today was my chance to play. First up, a cute little carrying bag loosely based on my Movin' and Groovin' Bag. This is going to make a great bag for my eight year old niece. Won't she have a great Christmas this year.

The back panel filled with polka dots on a tiny grid. A great print for stash building.

And this just makes me smile. My label on my friend Pam's fabric. Call me silly, I don't care. The small things make me happy.

Of course, it's impossible to keep from smiling with this collection on your table and at your machine. I whipped up a tissue holder and an ID Keeper to match. Given that Christmas isn't quite here, I have plenty of time to make other little goodies to add to this present.

Add some cute to your stash and go buy Pam's fabric. You won't be disappointed. And if you aren't familiar with Pam, go follow her blog. There's always something happening there.

Sugar High

Yesterday I met up with my big sister and three of my grown nieces. You've probably guessed by now that we ended up at Extraordinary Desserts. The Pumpkin Cheesecake for my sister.

The Viking for my niece who will be a first time mom any day now.

And my choice, a Valrhona Hot Chocolate. There's nothing like Extraordinary Desserts when you want to treat yourself. You just need to get all conversation out of the way before you crash off that sugar high. Because after that, not much happens unless you order an espresso before hitting the road. Not that I would know anything about that.

The Last of the Market Projects

Here's the last of the pictures relating to Market. I didn't have time to stage things for photos before sending them off but I think you can get a good feel for some of the things I made for Jane's booth. Everything from birds to bags to table runners. And all of it great fun to make.

The Anywhere Bag had to make an appearance. The polka dot ribbon was the perfect trim for this one.

Well, what about that...more polka dot ribbon on the Note Pad Holder.

And again on this one. There seems to have been a theme at work here.

I also played around with a new bag in a 50's style. A pattern will follow for this one. Hopefully, by the end of the year.

This table runner turned out even better than I expected. I didn't get a picture after I added all the buttons, unfortunately. But you can certainly see how the dots and white solid make the fussy cut squares come to life. The buttons were just the icing on the cake.

And that's most everything I have pictures of, though certainly not all that was accomplished. I hope you forgive me for not having more pictures. But if you follow Jane's blog you are likely to see some of it featured now and then.

Thanks for all your encouragement during the crazy Market preparation and adventure. Maybe now we can get back to the regular craziness that is 100 Billion Stars.

Market Sewing - Flannel

From fleece I moved on to flannel. Both filled the house with lint. But the flannel is so soft and went together so smoothly in this quilt made out of Erin McMorris' newest line, Greenhouse, that I quickly got over the lint.

A box of flannel arrived on my doorstep and I jumped into action. With no specific plan and no requirements other than size, I did what I love doing best. Let the fabric do its thing. The Buttonwood print begged for drama so I gave it a star burst pattern.

The cute flowers wanted some extra attention so I placed them at joins and in the centers of the large squares. A few buttons joined in the fun.

The colors are upbeat. The designs are lighthearted. Greenhouse is perfect for children and those who are still children at heart.

Bloggers' Quilt Festival 2011 Fall

I'm barely making the deadline for Bloggers' Quilt Festival. Better late than never, right? It was easy to choose a quilt this year. This bold and colorful West Indies quilt makes me smile every time. And if I had any doubts about sharing this one, the approval of a black cat would dispel them in an instance.

I originally posted about it here. One thing I like about this quilt is the fussy cutting. It really changes the feel of the print. By separating the design elements with a solid sashing, I have given them space to shine. The print lends itself to other types of fussy cutting too. Stack 'n' Whack or hexagon flowers would suit it perfectly.

Because pink and yellow are so predominant, I added the pieced border using all the prints in the collection. For me, it adds a bit of relief albeit in a slightly chaotic fashion. A lot of happy energy in this quilt.

Market Sewing - Fleece

Let's move on to those sewing projects that took up so much time last month, shall we? First up, the dog bed with toy. Stinka had two jobs--modeling and quality control. Striking a pose and attacking the toy seemed to come naturally for her. Although I think she was really just making sure that cat hairs made the trip to Market. Or else sending a message to whatever dog might end up on this bed in the future.

The fleece is printed with Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane designs and it sews up beautifully.

Two child size ponchos (McCalls 6431) went together quickly. I kept thinking about a flannel lined fleece robe. Sounds perfect for winter, doesn't it?

More Pictures from Market

Because Market is "MARKET!", it's very hard to get lots of pictures. When you get a chance to wander, you forget the camera. Or if you remember the camera, the booth you want photos of is filled with people. So my pictures are all of the little environment where I hung out--the Free Spirit section. And I must say, it's a great place to be. Unfortunately, I did not get to hang out on this wonderful patchwork couch done up in various Free Spirit designer collections.

However, I did get the chance to see what happens to my sample sewing once it gets into Free Spirit's hands. The star burst quilt on the left is one of my sewing assignments. Erin McMorris' new line in flannel--so soft. I'll share more photos of that in another post. As you might suspect, there are some Melissa P touches on there.

The two Multi-Tasker Totes, six Ruthie Clutches and the two pairs of slippers all came out of my sewing machine. It was fun to see them in their "natural habitat".

And of course, very energizing to walk by Kaffe and Brandon's booth.

Across the way from Jane's booth was Anna Maria Horner's booth. Anna never disappoints. Her booth was gorgeous. And her darling assistant, Pierette, was fun to chat with when things slowed down. I did take several opportunities to sit on that couch.

A booth that is guaranteed to see a lot of foot traffic--Amy Butler's. Perfectly appointed and thoughtfully designed.

But this year she shared some of her space with her husband, David. His first fabric line is going to take the fabric world by storm, I think. I'm very excited to see how this infusion of masculine energy turns things upside down. Muted and dark, these prints have great potential for lifestyle projects of all kinds. Especially if you have men and boys to sew for.

But it's the people at Market who make the experience so fun. Above, it's Susan, myself and Jane in Jane's booth. And below, myself, Anna and Pierette. I enjoyed all the hours spent with them.

Stunning Sassaman Booth

The last five days have been a blur. Market has come and gone. I've been halfway across the country and back again. New friends, new ideas and a new appreciation for the work it takes to make huge events like Market happen. It's going to take a few posts to share it all with you.

Friday morning was Jane's Schoolhouse lecture followed by booth set up. Quite a dramatic difference in the before and after photos, don't you think? Boxes and suitcases filled with beautiful fabric treasure transformed a small, dull space into a colorful corner of optimistic beauty.

The show stopper, fondly called "Doris", was the mannequin on center stage dressed in Sassaman style. Susan, Jane's assistant, made the dress using Vintage Vogue 1094. She sewed sequins to the center of each daisy on the skirt for an eye catching sparkle that delighted passerby.

The 100 Billion Stars contribution graced this side of the booth. I'll show more of those up close in another post. Picture taking at Market is an iffy proposition with a point and shoot camera. I did manage to get pictures of most items before shipping them ahead.

Personalized Pincushion Tutorial

With the holidays just around the corner (how the heck did that happen!) it's time to think of handmade gifts. A while back I promised you a tutorial for this monogrammed pincushion. It's finally ready. Click here to access the pdf file.

These make great gifts, not only because they are personalized with the monogram, but because they can be tailored to the recipient by selective use of fabric. Since the pieces are small with the largest measuring 7 inches by 4 1/2 inches, you can use your scraps.

Got Energy?

Four more days, people! Only four more days until Market. This Thursday I leave Mr. P in charge of Casa P and board a plane for Houston. And you know what? I think I'm actually ready. Amazing, but true. This is not to say that I will not be trying to sew up to the very end, because I'm pretty sure I will. But all the things that had to be done, have been done. The rest is gravy, as they say.

I'm terribly excited about being surrounded by fabric and creativity and great people. And meeting friends I only know online. If you're going to Market, you will be able to find me in Jane Sassaman's booth or wandering around the Free Spirit area talking up all the latest collections. Say "Hi" and stop for a chat. I'd love to meet you.

If you aren't going, I will be posting about my big adventure when I get back. I completely understand the need for pictures, lots of them, and the low down on the whole show. I'll do my best to give you both.

A huge thank you to everyone of you who have shared my excitement about going, encouraged me with emails during my non-stop sewing, sent me coffee and made sure I was looking after myself. You're the best!

Slipped My Mind

I completely forgot to show you this little miscellany box. I meant to do it last month but somehow, I got distracted. Funny how that happens.

It's a simple little paper mache box from Michael's. I painted the inside with Plaid's Folk Art Paint and used Mod Podge to apply Anna Maria's Loulouthi fabrics to the sides.

But it's the top with its embroidered blossom that really makes me smile. I love that little flower. I drew the outline on an even weave white fabric and started filling in with Anna's Anchor embroidery threads. The sheen of these threads makes the final product glow.

These boxes are very inexpensive and make great gifts. You wouldn't have to go to the lengths I did. You could paint the whole thing. Or decoupage with paper. It might not be a bad idea to have a few of these on hand for the holidays. Christmas is coming, believe it or not.

Two Weeks!

Two weeks until Quilt Market! Time is flying and the fabric is still piled up at the sewing machine. I've completely lost track of which phase I'm working on. I think Phase 4 and Phase 6, but don't hold me to it.

I wanted to have a humorous post for you but my funny bone must have carpal tunnel. All that sewing, you know. Instead, I'm directing you to this book.

The Details

Lest you think I am drowning in fabric, I offer you proof that the devilish details surround me as well. It takes a little something extra to complete a project with a Melissa P touch. Ribbon, pom pom fringe, rick rack, buttons--all of it essential to the dramatic finish.

To play with Jane's Early Bird collection I gathered together everything I had on hand that worked with the color schemes. Into the big plastic tub it went. It sits by the cutting table ready to make it's contribution. Such a happy mix, don't you think?

Progress is being made. However, there is still a lot left to do and that dang clock just keeps on ticking. Remember how I said I didn't know how many phases there would be to the Market Madness? Well, another phase arrived yesterday. Which means back to the machine, nose to the grindstone and all that.

Knock, Knock

Sometimes when you are hard at work, ignoring all the little things and focusing on the big ones, you need someone to remind you to take a break. Take time to relax for a moment and to breathe deeply. Fortunately, Pete takes time out of his daily cat routine to remind me. Somewhere between napping, playing with water and bird watching, he checks in on me. I have no resistance to feline tricks. Purring, plaintive cries, antics: I respond to them all. Surprised? I didn't think so.

Early Birds Have Arrived

Phew! Phase one, two and three of the Market madness are now behind me. Now....onto phase four.

How many phases are there, you ask? It's a good question. I just don't have an answer. A new phase could open up the week before Market.

While I'm busy cutting and sewing, head over to Jane's site and check out her newest collection, Early Birds. She will be featuring them in her booth at Quilt Market. I think they are going to make a great impression.

And while you are busy being thrilled by these fabrics, I'm going to get back to my long list of things I want to do with them. It might take a pound of coffee and some dark chocolate, but I'm pretty sure I can get most of them finished in time.

September seemed to slip by without slowing down at all. I'm trying to think about what I accomplished and I'm not really sure. I have to use my photo files to remind myself of all the things that went on around here. It appears I really was keeping busy. Go figure. And this week has been on exception.

The Market sewing is fast and furious. A bit more furious at times, particularly after the coffee breaks. But for the most part, things are coming together. Tomorrow will be a day of pinning and quilting. I'm desperately hoping not to have any tiny furry visitors inspecting my work. Pin basting quilts takes place on the wood floor in the living room and I do not want to see any whisker cleaning while I'm crawling around on my hands and knees.

Things were going along smoothly. I got a box shipped, obtained a new chair for sewing (more on that later) and made progress on the sewing I was planning for the day. I even spent some time outdoors with Stinka and Pete enjoying the sunshine, something that has been missing for days.

And then........I was sitting in my new chair, talking on the telephone to Mr. P about dinner plans and grocery shopping, feeling relaxed and happy about the new chair, when all of the sudden I saw a gray mouse disappear behind the bookcase. And I screamed. It was more of an "Ackkkkkkkk!!!" than an "Eeeekkkk!!" and was quickly followed by "There's a mouse in the house!!!!" As Mr. P did the whole "It's just a mouse" thing, the mouse came out from under the TV stand and washed his whiskers...right in plain sight! So, naturally, I screamed again. About that time, Mr. P decided he had another call to take and promptly got off the phone.

After I gave the mouse a lecture, he scurried over to the fireplace and went into hiding. He hasn't been seen since. And I'm hoping we never see him again. We have traps set and sonic devices emitting anti-rodent frequencies. If I find this mouse has been in the fabric, it's going to be war.

See that box? You wouldn't know to look at it, but Quilt Market Madness is in there. My sewing assignments have arrived and it is time to get busy. Because that's only one of the boxes. So if you don't hear from me quite as often over the next couple of weeks, you'll know I'm sitting at the sewing machine, nose to the grindstone.

I bought a new ironing board cover in anticipation. Do you see this? Apparently, ironing board covers are not intended for the kind of use seamstresses and quilters put them through. Six to twelve times a month?! Seriously? Even Mr. P would qualify for a Superior Ironing Board Cover.

Oh Scrap!

Summer is on the way out. The Autumnal Equinox arrives on Friday, at least for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. However, this does not mean the end of playful, colorful fabric combinations. Thank goodness! The scrap piles have been getting some attention lately. Sis Boom scraps give this pillow cover a feeling of light, airy happiness. (Click on the pictures for a better view.)

Change the scraps and change the feel. A stack of Sassaman scraps provides an entirely different look.

Still happy but the colors and patterns have a wilder feel. A bit less structured, a lot more organic.

I love them both. They currently reside in the same chair where I can look at them and scheme up other scrappy projects.

Green Drama

Summer will be over soon. An entire array of plants will take center stage. Angel's Trumpets don't seem to notice the subtle change of seasons of our climate and bloom off and on all year round. This yellow single flowered Brugmansia is putting on quite the show at Balboa Park. Tucked behind the International Houses, it provides a visually arresting display.

I don't know what plant this is but I love the structure of it. The waxy little flower whose petals seem imprinted and the thick oval leaves prove that simplicity is beautiful.

There is plenty to do to tend the plants here at Casa P. And there is just enough time to consider what new beauty can be added to our constantly-in-transition backyard. Another Brug would be fine with me. Perhaps a pink one.

For now, it's the vegetable garden that needs the most work. At the moment there are two eager helpers waiting at the back door for me to get to work. The four footed don't make for the best helpers. But they are certainly the best kind of gardening company.

Thread Therapy

I'm sure you recall my ravings over Anna's threads. (In case you missed it, you can find it here.) This pillow cover was such a delight to make. Every stitch was a joy. Now do you see why I'm so in love with them? They are gorgeous!

Under the influence of Kazak embroidery, I drew this multi-layered blossom on a piece of white medium weight cotton fabric. Some time with the hoop, needle and threads followed. This is all handwork. No machine stitching in this embroidery work. I say that only because it has been mistaken for machine work and I don't want you to think you can't do this. You can! No fancy machine or software is required. Just you and your hands.

I used basic stitches to create this design. Satin stitching, chain stitching, french knots and star stitches. After the embroidery was complete, I created the pillow front using reverse applique. With Anna's fabulous perle cotton threads I hand quilted the pillow front and added the stitching around the circle.

Now I do realize that most of you may not be feeling this ambitious. An heirloom piece may not be on your agenda right now. And that is perfectly alright. Start with a small design. As the holidays approach, I hope to have several gift ideas for you that incorporate simple handwork. Because nothing shows handmade love like embroidery.

Bat Makeover -- Unexpected Halloween Decor

There's no better time for a little crafty subversion than Halloween. These bats are dressed to the nines. Whether you make your own Bat Mobile or string them on a garland, these creatures of the night are sure to capture the imaginations of young and old alike.

Gather your supplies:

Bat paper shapes (I used a Creatology pack of 12 from Michael's.)
Mod Podge -- Fabric and Matte
Applicators
Fabric scraps
Scissors
Glitter glue

To make the bats, follow these steps:

Prepare fabric scraps by applying a coat of Fabric Mod Podge to the right side of the fabric. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Apply Matte Mod Podge to one side of paper bat. Fix to the wrong side of fabric scrap. Get out all air bubbles. A brayer works great but you can also use a credit card or even the back side of a butter knife. Let dry.
Trim the fabric around the edges of the paper bat shape.
Apply Matte Mod Podge to remaining side of bat. Fix to the wrong side of fabric scrap. Again, get out all air bubbles and let dry.
Trim the fabric around the edges.
Punch a hole in the top center of the bat's head. A sturdy paper hole punch will work.
Decorate each bat using glitter glue. If you have Sparkle Mod Podge, you can add a sparkly layer now.
String ribbon through each bat. Attach to a mobile or string them together for a garland.

And that's all there is to it! Easy, fun and completely unexpected Halloween decor.

Two Bags Later

Some of my sewing time lately has been wrapped up in this pattern. I love it! The pattern is by Anna Maria Horner. The first bag, seen below in Anna Maria's Loulouthi fabrics, took a bit longer than I expected. You really need to have all your brain cells functioning when you read and execute this one the first time. Residual migraine dullness is not helpful. Just a tip.

But once you get it finished, it's all worth it. Every rip and every resewn seam quickly fades from memory. This bag holds a lot of stuff. I particularly like that my phone, my sunglasses, my keys and a bottle of water will all fit in the outside pockets.

Yesterday, I made a second bag. This one will be a gift filled with goodies. I used a heavyweight denim without any interfacing for the bag's exterior--very durable and easy to spot clean on the go. For the remaining pieces I used Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane. The bright yellows really pop next to the dark denim.

If you haven't given this pattern a try, you should. I'll definitely be making myself another one. But first, back to the Mod Podge. Halloween goodies coming up soon.

Who Flipped the Switch?

You may have heard about our little adventure here in San Diego yesterday. A power blackout hit all of San Diego county, parts of southern Orange county, Riverside county, Imperial county and Baja California. Around 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, all power ceased. By 11:50 p.m. we had power back at our house. By the news conference this morning at 5:30 a.m. they were able to report that almost everyone was back in service. Thank you, SDGE! Considering what it takes to get a grid energized and back online, that was amazing.

Here's a few of the things we learned from this:

Add Starbuck's instant coffee to our Emergency Preparedness kit. (Without electricity, we were going to have to resort to chewing on coffee beans while sipping hot water.)
Sometimes, my seemingly useless or odd purchases come in handy. (Like flameless candles, solar garden lights and crank radios.)
Increase the variety of canned foods around here. It was looking pretty dismal if we were going to be eating from the pantry for a few days. Red beans, black beans, garbanzo beans, black eyed peas, pinto beans and a few cans of smoked fish, some marinara sauces and black olives.

We'll be enjoying a weekend with the power back on. I hope you enjoy yours too. And if you don't have an Emergency Preparedness Kit and Plan, make one!

From Chocolate to Charity

Remember the Devil's Food Cake cupcakes? Last night we had them with mascarpone icing instead of ice cream. A few tablespoons of mascarpone, about 3/4 tablespoon of powdered sugar and an eighth of a teaspoon of vanilla bean paste--mix it well and watch it disappear. Seriously, someone is going to lick the bowl, it's so good.

I made the cupcakes from Betty Crocker's Gluten Free Devil's Food Cake mix--with some serious Melissa P tweaks. These are more like Mexican Chocolate Cupcakes. I added one teaspoon of cinnamon and over one teaspoon of vanilla bean paste. They're perfectly fine straight out of the box. I just couldn't leave well enough alone.

It may have been the weather. It may have been the chocolate. Or it may have been the stack of Loulouthi waiting for my attention. Whatever it was, it motivated me to make this bag for my sister. This is my free pattern, the Movin' and Groovin' Bag.

I'm sure you aren't surprised to see that I tweaked it a little too. I added fabric bands along the top and attached them with binding to match the bag body. And I widened the strap and added a decorative "ribbon" band using another print.

The bag closes with a magnetic snap instead of velcro. You can also see that I added a band to the lining. Okay...so I tweaked it a lot. I confess. I just get carried away when I have all these prints that want in on the action.

Today I switched gears completely. And I'm hoping you will decide to do the same. Scott at Blue Nickel Studios is collecting 10.5 inch squares to make quilts. These are for Bumble Beans Basic Quilt Gather. Here's Scott's post with details. And here is Victoria's page on the project.

It doesn't take any time at all to stitch up a 10.5 inch square. So grab some scraps and sit down at the machine for a few minutes. Don't think about it. Don't put it off until later. Like Nike says, "Just do it!" And if you need a nudge, grab a cupcake first.

Color Wise

How have you been? It feels like days and days since I sat down to post. I apologize for that. To get back in your good graces, I'm giving you some shots of color from the last several days. First off, a gorgeous giant hibiscus. These are putting on extravagant displays at the Zoo right now.

The colors are reminiscent of my new stack of fabrics. Joel Dewberry's Heirloom is even better in real life. Luscious plums and raspberries with just enough gold to set them off.

A trip to the plant nursery this morning confirmed these colors for my palette. You know how I feel about those nudges from nature. Time to jump in and start cutting and sewing.

And then there's this pop of color. A new watering jug has somehow ended up on the list of Needed Things. Funny how that works. Unfortunately, that's all the color I have time to share for now.

I can smell the ribs smoking in the backyard. Coleslaw and cucumber salad need to be made yet. Gluten-free Devil's Food Cake Cupcakes are fresh out of the oven. It's going to be a good dinner tonight.

Two Years On

Hard to believe but it's true...the blog turns two. Blogging has given me so much more than I ever expected. I can't imagine life without the friends I've made. Nor can I imagine life without all the inspirational sites I've grown so fond of, visiting them over my morning coffee and feeling grateful for the way the Internet can broaden our lives.

More Monograms

More thread play at Casa P over the last few days. I haven't grown tired of my gorgeous threads. I did take a break from the embroidery on the Spiderweb quilt. It was too hot to have that quilt top sitting in my lap. Squares of Aida cloth were another story altogether though.

A tutorial for this little pin cushion is in the works, just in case your resistance to beautiful threads is as weak as mine.

I just can't leave this quilt alone. No matter how hard I try focusing on other things, I keep coming back to this Spiderweb quilt. Maybe because I'm so much closer to finishing it.

Or maybe because I'm having too much fun adding embroidered elements like crazy spiky flowers.

And french knot butterflies.

Whatever it is, I'm hooked. Every day I add a little bit more. Soon it will be time for basting and quilting.

Best Laid Schemes

You know the thing about the best laid schemes...they often go astray. Fortunately for me, I am not quite the enduring pessimist that Mr. Burns was. My scheme for the weekend was to sit and play with my new Anchor threads. Instead, I spent it finishing up the quilt top of the Sis Boom Spiderweb.

This one web gives you a glimpse of the mismatched vibe of the quilt. The strips are unequal in size, the outer edges of the web do not match perfectly at the white star points and the center does not have perfect points. At the beginning I did it because I didn't like the uneven strips with perfectly matched seams everywhere else. By the end, I realized the total effect is more organic.

I prefer the slightly messy look of it all. Perhaps because real spider webs are often messy. And heaven knows, the interconnected web of our existences is a jumble we can never perfectly arrange.

Phase 3 will take a bit more time as I have plans to use those new threads to add bits of excitement to the quilt top before quilting. Stay tuned for more on that in the future.

My Weekend Color Fix

It is truly a happy Friday here at Casa P. Look at all these beautiful Anchor perle cotton threads! They arrived yesterday after a lengthy trip from the UK. Aren't they amazing?

In the photo it appears as though I received duplicates of golds and rust. However, they're all different shades. I'm excited about putting these to use. These colors will complement the assortments of Anna Maria Horner's collection which I've been gushing over for weeks.

I promised you a look at the finished pillow from this post. This traditional quilt block looks fresh and modern in West Indies (which incidentally is popping up in shops now). Irregularly spaced squares of quilting and a gathered fabric flower with buttons add to the modern vibe.

The weathermen are promising even cooler temperatures this weekend. It will be the kind of weather that encourages sitting by the window curled up with thread and embroidery. Good thing I got that package in time.

Where Has All the Sunshine Gone?

The weather pattern here on the coast has been consistent--consistently gray and below average temperatures. It is highly demotivating for me. I'm definitely a sunny skies and warm weather girl. To cheer myself up I filled my craft/cutting table with colorful fabrics and made do.

Once again, I am subconsciously picking up themes from the garden. The fresh green and white combination in the alyssum is mimicked in the pillow cover made in West Indies prints. I have one more bit to add and then I can show you the finished project.

Mostly, I played with fabrics that provided the vibrancy I'm missing in the environment. Sis Boom scraps went together for a few more half square triangles for my Sis Boom Spiderweb quilt. I love the way unexpected print combinations are revealed. For instance, the red Sis Boom Basics stripe and the Matilda from the new West Indies collection make for a very dramatic pair.

The sun is breaking through the marine layer as I type. Oh happy day! Enjoy the remainder of your weekend. May your day be sunny and bright.

Fabric Talks

Sometimes you see a particular fabric and know immediately who is meant to have some. The fabric, Matilda in Brandy from Jennifer's West Indies collection, shouts their name loud and clear. As soon as I saw this toile in blue and red, I said, out loud and with no one to hear me, "That is so Rachael!" I let ideas percolate a bit and this pillow cover is the result.

Stinka helped get a photo. You can tell she's exhausted by her modeling session. Such hard work. Especially when you have to fight sudden feline urges to sink your teeth into the nice fluffy quilt.

I used Anchor embroidery thread for the counted cross stitch. The color is 29 and is from Anna Maria's palette of threads. If you haven't been over to check out these threads.....what are you waiting for?!

I love the vibrancy of the colors in this print, especially with a dash of white. There's something about this print that is quintessential Sis Boom. I know Rachael and I won't be the only ones to think so.

Mod Podge Hangers

Mod Podge does it again! Another fun, quick and highly individualized project. A new grandnephew is on the way and these small hangers are the perfect addition to a basket of gifts. I experimented with a few different fabrics and trims. Including some scraps of laminated quilting cotton in the hanger below.

Assemble the basics and get started.

Here's how:

Prepare fabric scrap by applying fabric Mod Podge to the right side of fabric with applicator. Remember to use something like foil or wax paper underneath to protect your surface.
When dry, carefully trace hanger outline onto wrong side of fabric. Cut.
Apply fabric to hanger with regular Mod Podge. Repeat for other side.
If desired, add more Mod Podge to fabric. This would be a great time to add Sparkle or Glimmer Mod Podge. (If using laminated fabric, skip this step.)
Using Mod Podge or craft glue, apply trim around edges of hanger.
Add decorative bits to top of hanger. (Pom poms, ribbons or beads all work well.)

And that's it! You're ready to gift some adorable hangers.

For these projects, I used Tanya Whelan's Delilah fabrics and Jennifer Paganelli's laminated Honey Child fabric. The wooden hangers are available at Michael's.

You Scream, I Scream

The weekend went by so quickly. Housework and errands were completed with time left over for sewing and crafting. This Coconut Ice Milk is so easy and quick that I even managed to fit it into the schedule. I am so glad I did. It tastes incredible, if I do say so myself. Here's my spur-of-the-moment/let's-hope-this-works recipe:

1 can of cream of coconut (Goya brand is gluten free)
28 ounces of coconut milk-unsweetened (I used Coconut Dream)
2 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste (you can substitute regular vanilla but the paste has a more intense flavor)

Mix the ingredients together and chill. Pour into your ice cream maker and in about 25 minutes you have delicious coconut ice milk. Really simple. Really yummy.

West Indies and a Black Cat

I've been so fortunate to have Jennifer's West Indies fabrics before their release. What a privilege to stir up excitement before it hits the shops. In the last post I promised you a reveal. The colors are so vibrant it's hard to get just the right lighting to show them off. I've been frustrated for days trying to get the right light, the right feel. This afternoon I tried again--with some help. I decided this was "it".

Cat approval is the sign of a job well done. Stinka looks so relaxed here, doesn't she? Well, don't let that fool you.

This is what most of the shots are like. Claws out, ears back, playing with everything.

A little hide and seek.

There's some special affinity between cats and fabric. Maybe one day we'll know how to explain it scientifically. In the meantime, I'm willing to accept a magical explanation. Especially when it comes to black cats.

The center field of the quilt uses Free Spirit Designer Dapples in Fuchsia mixed with fussy cut squares and triangles. I used approximately 7/8 of a yard of Marie in yellow. Apart from a few scraps, there is nothing left of that print. The first border is Free Spirit Designer Dapples in Lemon. To keep things lively, I followed it with a pieced border. The size of these pieces varies and includes something from everything in the collection.

Because the quilt has a nostalgic feel to me, I chose to tie the center field with #5 pearl cotton in a bright yellow. I machine stitched around the borders with Rowan quilting thread. It's the perfect size for a baby quilt, a picnic quilt or a wall hanging.

The pillow is simply pieced using four 90 degree triangles which have been fussy cut to create a kaleidoscopic effect. A simple border frames the square. You can read about the stitching on the pillow in the previous post.

There are other West Indies projects to come. Stay tuned for those. Meanwhile, call your local quilt shop and be sure they've placed their order for West Indies. This will be a quick selling collection. About as quick as a small black cat.

Loose Ends

The last two weeks have been a bit haphazard as far as projects go. A lot of jumping around from one project to another. Today, I feel like I'm getting most of it under control. These boxed sets of Anna Maria's perle cottons contributed to the creative free for all. I love these. I could sit with these all day long stitching away from dawn to dusk.

The two collections are Reflecting Pool and Geranium Wall. Not only do they compliment her latest line, Loulouthi, but past lines as well. I think you will find the colors will go with many other designer's fabrics too.

For instance, pull out these three colors and put them with Jennifer Paganelli's West Indies. Perfection! I completed a small quilt that goes with this quilted pillow. I just need to do a little staging for photos.

Then we'll do a big reveal. You're going to love it. Promise!

And now back to the uncompleted embroidery project with Loulouthi. More on that one later. Hope you enjoyed your weekend.

Moving Along

Blogging seems to come easily around here. After all, this is the 400th post in less than two years! It could easily have been more, trust me. Fortunately, my internal editor has been at work; otherwise, you would have been subjected to rants, tirades and other useless moaning.. Hopefully, you've found something good here--something inspiring or thought provoking.

Because it isn't about me. It's about creativity and passion and color and Life. I'm just a conduit. That's all any of us are. The moment you believe that you are the source of an original thought or idea, that you have generated something new and fantastic, you're sunk. I'm not going to philosophize. I'll just remind you that "There is nothing new under the sun."

To be a Creative, you must let go of everything. Of all your expectations, your dreams, your ego driven fantasies. If you want to live it, you have stop playing at it. You have to put all your energy into moving forward. The steps may be small and halting at times. That's okay. Just move along with your hands open, ready to accept what comes your way. Because if your hands have a death grip on your small minded ideas of your future, you will miss out on the blessings that come your way. And all the possibilities that present themselves will evaporate.

I'm moving forward, hands and arms wide open, ready to be astonished by what is yet to come. Who's with me?

Crafty Compulsion

Sometimes handwork is the best work. Over the weekend, while watching the Season 7 marathon of Project Runway, I made fabric flowers and yo yos. I'm blaming it all on Jenny. See the box in the picture below? No? Well, that's because it is overflowing with scraps she so generously sent me.

I asked her for a few Sis Boom scraps to round out my scrappy Sis Boom Spiderweb blocks. I thought the postman would deliver something the size of a Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope. Ha! Silly me! This is what he brought instead.

Because it is currently sitting on the ottoman in plain sight, I feel compelled to do things with the scraps. The only way to solve this problem is to hide it away. Otherwise, I will continue to be distracted by all the bits and pieces.

My fabric friends are some of the most generous people in the world. They also tend to be great enablers. How lucky am I.

If you thought I was slacking off on my reading around here lately, think again. Last week I read A Dance with Dragons. (The week before that I read A Feast for Crows for the second time to refresh my memory.) If you aren't an epic fantasy reader, just skip this post. I'll understand.

Along with millions of other George R. R. Martin fans, I have been waiting forever for this book. And I do mean "FOREVER!" At least since finishing the last sentence of A Feast for Crows in October of 2005. But I forgive Mr. Martin for all the delays. One of the main reasons I am so quick to forgive him, is that I'm now sitting here waiting for the next installment. No matter how long it takes, I will still be waiting to find out what is happening to all my favorite characters. I especially want to know what the villains are plotting next.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a very complex series of books. A Dance with Dragons weighs in at over 1,000 pages if you include the appendices. I know many people are only recently discovering the series because of the HBO series A Game of Thrones which premiered in April. I envy them the long days and nights of reading these books back to back.

Mr. Martin, along with many other writers of series, get a lot of flack for the time it takes to produce the next book. For my part I can only be grateful that authors keep at it. In the midst of Life and all of its demands they manage to maintain the relationship with their characters that is so vital to a properly told story. It is no mean feat to keep the balance.

A Four Legged Grand-niece

One of my grown nieces has a new puppy. Meet Riesling. (Well, that's the name Mr. P and I are calling her. Ricin doesn't really seem like the proper kind of name for a dog. Miss Grace, are you listening to your Aunt Melissa?)

We drove out to meet the pup this morning. She is a bundle of energy with sharp little teeth. And she loves water--drinking it, splashing it, sitting in it. I think someone has their hands full for the foreseeable future. Mr. P and I are glad it isn't us. We're quite content to watch this furry grand-niece from afar.

Miss Grace, remember you are the pack leader. Practice calm, assertive energy and you will be rewarded with a healthy balanced dog to share your days and nights for many years to come.

The Contrary Garden

It takes hot sunny days to grow a garden. So far, there's not enough of either to make peppers or tomatoes happy. However, the Zapotec tomato is showing some promise. I can't wait for these. They may look weird, but they have incredible taste. Great for a caprese salad.

We're having much better luck with the chard. Saute in olive oil with garlic and serve with a dash of apple cider vinegar. A perfect accompaniment to feijoada, ,black eyed peas and cornbread or barbecued chicken. The rest of the garden....not so productive.

It's a good thing I have such loving company while I water the garden and pull weeds. Otherwise, I might begin to think it wasn't worth the trouble.

Sugar High

Extraordinary Desserts always tops the list for decadent desserts. Whenever family comes to town, they usually want to make it a destination during their stay. This past week my oldest sister and my oldest niece were in town. And naturally, Extraordinary was the place for us to meet up. We were joined by my other sister and one other niece. These are the desserts that arrived at our table. Above you'll see the Tropical Fruit Pavlova.

Followed by a large slice of Extraordinary Carrot Cake.

Then a Double Chocolate Pot de Creme.

And lastly, my own dessert, a couple small scoops of Raspberry Mascarpone Ice Cream. A tall glass of iced coffee and I was perfectly content.

As you might well imagine, there was a lot of chatter and laughter at our table. Before we knew it, the parking meters were about to expire. I think we all moved a bit slower on the way out the door. Something about a sugar stupor.

Mod Podge Banishes Boring--A Simple Organizer

There are so many boring organizational aids. And while the choices for pretty organizers has come a long way in the last decade or two, nothing eliminates the boredom like a repurposed, highly personalized item on your worktop. I found this utensil caddy at Target in the picnic/BBQ section. With three sections on one side of the handle and one open section on the other, it makes the perfect place for my tools and notebooks.

It wasn't long before the Mod Podge and fabric were out. A short time later, it was ready to be put to good use. For the Mod Podge I used the Hard Coat formula. For fabric, Jane Sassaman's Garden Divas in the Dragonfly Check print. A little black grosgrain ribbon was the final touch.

To keep my scissors from scratching up the bottom I placed a foam can insulator inside one section. A hot beverage to-go cup sits inside another and keeps the pens, brushes, etc. corralled and upright.

If you haven't opened up the Mod Podge yet this summer, this is a great project to undertake.

Excuses, Excuses

I meant to post on Friday evening. I meant to post yesterday as well. Somehow, I just didn't get to it. And this is a big reason why it didn't happen as I intended. I've been wanting to make a Spiderweb quilt for some time. Then I saw one at the Mingei Museum--scrappy and stunning.

Synchronicity was at work when I picked up Material Obsession 2 for an inspirational color jolt. I saw it there as well. And knowing that it pays to listen to these things, especially when it comes to all things creative, I started my own scrappy Sis Boom Spiderweb.

If you want to join along, I'm providing a guide to my "method". I've chosen a solid white background but you are not limited to solids. Your own imagination is the limit. (I think pin dots would be one stunning alternative.) Gather up your scraps and cut them into varying widths and lengths. I have widths between 2 1/4 inch and 1 1/4 inch. Lengths range from 2 inches to 8 1/2 inches.

Cut squares of the background fabric 14 3/4 inches. Cut into two half square triangles by cutting diagonally across the square. You can certainly make your squares smaller. I chose to go a bit large because I want my strips to be wide enough to show off design details. Wider strips need a bigger square to maintain a pleasing proportion.

Mark each triangle 4 1/2 inches from right angle along each side. (That's 4 1/2 inches from the pointy top down to the right and down to the left.) Find the center of the hypotenuse. (That would be the center of the long base of the triangle.) Mark 1/4 inch from each side of center. Draw a line from left side mark to left of center mark. Draw line from right side mark to right of center mark.

Lay first fabric strip face down on right side of background. Line up edge of strip with your marked line. Sew a 1/4 inch seam. Flip and gently press.

Select second strip. With right sides together sew strips. Do not sew through background.

Flip and press new strip. Move on to successive strips following the same process. Each section should have six or seven strips. Strips do not align for the final assembly so you are free to vary strip widths as you please.

Once you have a side completed, spray with sizing and press.

Turn it over and trim edges.

Carefully trim off the background portion beneath the strips that has been acting as your guide.

Repeat for the other side of the triangle. To assemble, sew half squares triangles together to form blocks. Sew blocks together to form quilt top. Proceed with quilting and binding.

I hope you'll try this one. It's an enormous amount of fun. And it's never a bad thing to work on projects that eat into your scrap bins. You'll have to excuse me, there are more scrappy strips waiting for their transformation.

Throwing White Into The Mix

Remember those squares? Well, they're not squares any longer. They're a nice little baby quilt/wall hanging. Can't you see this in a nursery? Light, airy and feminine.

I know a lot of people shy away from Jane's prints. They overwhelm some and intimidate others. Working with bold, colorful prints can be a challenge if you are used to soft, pale color schemes with light design details.

Here's proof that you can make a little color go a long way. I mixed fussy cut blocks with solid white and stuck to a simple quilting design. The result is very different from all of my other Sassaman quilts. This one is understated yet interesting. It is calm but full of charm. And just look how well it goes with the quilted and embroidered pillow.

Don't let yourself be fooled into avoiding colorful prints laden with design elements. They hold a treasure trove of possibilities. Isolate a few of your favorite design elements, fussy cut them and see what happens. You just might be pleasantly surprised.

Garden Inspiration

Once again, I seem to be subconsciously inspired by the colors in the garden. The lisianthus are starting to bloom and this one with its delicate pink edges has me in the mood for something light and feminine.

Pieces have been cut and sewing has begun. It is coming together quite nicely, if I do say so myself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by this project--Jane's Garden Divas hard at work. But first, I have to get back to sewing all those pieces together.

Cats!

Our neighbor's cat, Patty aka Stinka, keeps us entertained. Her kitten antics are a vivid reminder of those years long ago when our own black cat climbed the screen, tore through the house like a tornado and jumped three feet up in the air for no reason at all. That cat eventually grew up to be a very loving and sedate cat.

The jury is out on Stinka. This morning she greeted me at the back door covered with grass seeds and spider webs. Shortly thereafter, she used the raised planter bed as her own personal toilet. She's a lovable nuisance, that much I already know. As for her future, more mature self, we will have to wait and see what develops. And keep a close eye on the garden soil in the meantime.

Practice, Practice, Practice

A while back I talked about Alisa Burke's Sketchbook Delight class. You may remember my excessive supply stash. I actually have done some sketching since then but not every day and lately not even every week. Which is bad, I know. So to prove that I haven't completely abandoned the whole idea, I'm showing these two sketches.

They are very different in style and subject. And yet they both remind me of the familiar. However, it's the whimsical nature of the buttons that entices me the most. I keep going back to it. And I believe one of the biggest benefits to a sketchbook, especially to someone just starting to keep one, is what it reveals to you when you look back at it. The way you can see trends in your subject matter or choice of media. All of it essential to finding your own voice.

My fabric voice rings loud and clear. My drawing voice is still just a bunch of chatter and whistles and sighs. Back to the drawing board I go. I have a lot of practicing to do yet.

Mod Podge, Paint and Monograms

Mod Podge isn't just for girls and all things sparkly. It's also the perfect thing to whip up something handmade for a boy. For instance, this monogrammed canvas. Simple supply list and almost idiot proof.

These are the supplies I used:

8" x 10" canvas
Mod Podge--Regular and Fabric
Fabric scrap (Jay McCarroll's Habitat)
Acrylic paint--white, black and red
One sheet of foam to make your own stamp designs

To begin, paint the canvas with one layer of a background color. I used white for this bold graphic effect. While the canvas dries, prepare your stamp designs. Cut your desired shapes out of the foam and glue them to a second piece of foam for extra handling ease. Or use found objects with interesting shapes. (I used a 16 penny nail head to make the red dots.)

Prepare your fabric scrap with Fabric Mod Podge. Remember to use something underneath it to protect your work surface. When dry, cut out the letter. I drew mine freehand but you can also print and enlarge any letter in any font you find attractive.

After the canvas is dry, apply the background design using your newly made stamps. Unless you glue them to scraps of wood or plastic, they will be flimsy. This is perfectly fine and you should not worry about any little bits of edges that leave paint behind. If they really bother you, you can paint over them. But I would caution against trying for perfection. Especially if you want to achieve a look like the one I made. Randomness and unexpected points of color add interest and help set off the more elegantly styled letter.

After all the paint has dried, apply your letter with regular Mod Podge. Apply several coats, drying between each of them to finish your project. Hang as is, frame it or set on a display stand on a shelf.

And that's it! You're done.

The hollyhocks are starting to bloom and the promise of clear sunny days lies before us. My sister-in-law arrives tomorrow for a four day visit to Casa P so there will be some sightseeing in our future. I will try to remember to take the camera along. Just in case you want to share in the sights.

Back on Track

Holy moly! It seems like I'm just checking back into reality. Or at least reality as I prefer it. Colds and computer troubles are fading into a distant memory. Still a bit to do to load the new computer with the right programs. But I'm back in the blogosphere. Finally! I'm so glad to be back.

Despite everything, I did manage to sew on Saturday. Jane Sassaman's Garden Divas continue to speak to me. I plan to add one more pieced border to this wall hanging. The soothing blue tones were just what I needed to keep from losing it completely; but I think something to bring out those pinks will make it sing.

The kitty in the first picture is our neighbor's cat, Petey. He and his sister are daily visitors. To them we are "the people who live in our other yard." They make us laugh. And Petey makes sure that I take breaks from sewing now and then to go outside to pet him. Sometimes it's the animals who know what's best.

Finally back to some sewing around here. Although, sadly, computer glitches are keeping me from sharing any photos. Perhaps by Monday, things will be operational around here. Or not. In the meantime, thank heavens for my tiny Netbook. I don't know how people manage to work off tablets and phones. I guess I'm just Old School.

It scares me to think of the Cloud. I know it's coming but I am not ready. I've had enough headache dealing with a crashed PC and malware/virus/etc. Can you imagine what happens when the Cloud crashes? Productivity plummets across the board.

What's Up With That?

Just when the brain cells started firing again, the computer developed some infections. It goes like that sometimes in Life. No sooner do you put out one fire but the next is threatening to engulf you. Most of today and all of my brain cells went to the fixing the computer's issues. While scans were running, I managed to crack open the Mod Podge and start a new project. Some days, the best you can do is revert to childhood and play with glue.

A Forced Rest

No productivity here over the weekend--a summer cold is getting the best of me. The garden, however, is coming along nicely. If the sun ever comes out, we just might get some June tomatoes from the Czech Bush. We've enjoyed a couple of red oak lettuce salads, some green beans and plenty of basil. But it's the tomatoes we're really looking forward to.

Mod Podge Tags -- Take Two

You know what I love about Mod Podge? Well, one thing, anyway. It's always there waiting for you, ready to go at a moment's notice. I also love the easy clean up, its nontoxic nature and the fun factor of working with something so simple.

To make these little plastic dog tags for kids (or kids-at-heart), you will need the following items:

Fabric Mod Podge
Applicator
Plastic dog tags (I found these at Joann's in the kid's summer craft section)
Fabric scraps
Scissors
Card stock (optional)

Apply the Mod Podge to the right side of your fabric scraps. Remember to do this on wax paper or aluminum foil to keep your work surface clean. Allow to dry. Using the template included with the tags, trace onto the wrong side of your fabric taking care to center any design element you wish to highlight. Cut out the piece and apply to the tag with more Mod Podge.

Use card stock for the insert on the second tag of the pair. Stamp or write the pertinent information on the card stock before inserting into the tag.

Put both tags on the ring and you are ready to go. Send your kids off to camp with easy identifiers for their bags and belongings. Or put them on your own bags for a whimsical touch. Make it your key chain or use them to easily identify various keys for things around your home--garage, shed, etc. It's completely up to you.

More Garden Divas

While the rest of the country struggles with heat waves, we're dealing with a lack of sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 60's. June Gloom usually means overcast skies with afternoon sunshine and temperatures hovering around 70 at least. It's depressing weather, demotivating weather. And to combat it, I've enlisted Jane Sassaman's Garden Divas.

The Exotic colorway is so bright and colorful with it's warm reds and energizing yellows . The quilt is made up of 6 inch squares from the Zinnias and the Daisy Checks, while the border is cut from the Bleeding Heart print. To break up the harsh angles of all those squares and checks I quilted it with a simple arc pattern.

The coordinating pillow contains fussy cut irises as well as bleeding hearts from the Bleeding Heart print and fussy cut dragonflies from Lively Silhouette. A burst of drama at the very center is a fussy cut flower from Lively Silhouette. I combined them all with red and yellow dots from Hothouse Garden for a little extra kick.

If you've got the fans on and the AC running, this may color combination may take you over the top. In that case, try this same easy mix in either the Peacock or Pastel range. The effect would be dramatically different.

Mini Gigi Pincushion Details

A lot going on here lately--some of it even included some sewing. Now that things have settled down a bit, I thought I'd post the details on the miniaturized Ruffled Gigi Pillow pincushion. After making this full size pillow, I couldn't resist a mini version--a couple of them are in my Flickr photostream. And I know some of you want to make your own mini version.

Here are the piece sizes for the mini:

Side rectangle = 2.5 inches x 18 inches
Two circles with a diameter of 9.75 inches (no need to piece the top or bottom)

Cut out the center of each circle so that you have a hole in the exact center with a diameter of 2.375 inches. Follow all directions of the original full size version as found in Jennifer Paganelli's Girl's World.

Be warned, it is hard to stop at one. They make excellent gifts both as pincushions and as toys for little girls. They're fluffy and sweet and hard to resist. Everyone picks them up and squeezes them--old and young alike. So you may want to cut out several sets and whip them up all at once. Just in case you get carried away. Or in case yours suddenly goes missing. (Yes, it has happened already.)

Antique Inspiration

I wanted to share another quilt from the Bold Expressions exhibition currently at the Mingei Museum. I posted some of the quilts earlier but held off on this one because it needs a post of its own.

This Pine Burr quilt measures 63 inches by 73 inches, making these blocks about 12 1/2 inches square. All those folded pieces whirling around the center of each block is quite amazing. And the variety of fabrics, while hard to distinguish in the photograph, is extensive--plaid, florals, stripes, dots and solids make up the mix. This quilt seems to blend together from a distance but there are bright reds, blacks, greens and yellows that really pop when you get close.

Girl's World Meets All Expectations

If you have any connection to the Sis Boom world, you've already been bowled over by Jennifer's book, Girl's World. The book delivers on every front. Beautiful photographs by Tim Geaney, fun and feminine projects--it's all in there. Even favorite fabric prints appear as background on the pages.

I started a couple of the book's projects over the weekend. First up, the Ruffled Gigi Pillow. This pillow is like a confection. One of my nieces will be around next week and I have a feeling she is going to want this one for herself. Fluffy Sis Boom goodness will be hard for her to resist.

I'm not a fan of piping. It isn't the look of it, but the making of it that I dread. However, I wanted to make this pillow the way it was designed so I didn't leave it out. Plus, it's an opportunity to add one extra fabric print to the mix. The top and bottom pieces were fussy cut so the fabric's flower stripe runs down the center of each piece. This makes for a balanced appearance in the end product.

And then it was on to the George Puppies. So easy, too cute. They'll be in the hands of a certain niece and nephew very soon. I know they will be loved to pieces.

Jennifer is a bright star in my world. I am so grateful for all the things she shares and for the hard work she puts into each of her endeavors. Thank you, Jennifer, for a brilliant book full of joy and inspiration.

Fussing Over Birds

Another fabric collection I had the privilege of playing with for Market was Valori Wells' Wrenly. Birds and flowers adorn the various prints. This quilt was like a Project Runway challenge for quilting. The box arrived on a Friday. I had no idea what was in it, had not seen any previews of the fabric. I had very limited time to make decisions and execute a design idea.

But the large bird print was begging to be fussy cut. I knew that immediately. The hexagonal piece takes things in a slightly different direction than squares set on point. It's a little bit of the unexpected. The triangles fill in the rows with pops of color. And Free Spirit's Designer Dapples in Lime really make it pop on the backside.

I used Y seams because I feel you have a little more control over the points. Contrary to what some of you may be thinking, Y seams are not difficult. They take a little more time and you do have to mark the points, but they are nothing to be afraid of. In fact, a quilt with big pieces like this one is a good way to practice and add this skill to your repertoire.

Working with colorful prints seems to agree with me. The box of fabric was opened, cut, sewn, quilted and shipped off in three days. Now, I certainly don't recommend you follow my example and speed through all the steps required. But I do recommend that you try some new things--maybe even something with a skill you don't feel you've mastered. If you choose to make this one, the pattern should be available in the coming weeks on the Free Spirit website.
